This application process is for employment beginning Fall 2018. All interviews will be for the Consultant in Training (CIT) position. If you appy to more than one location and receive multiple inviations for interviews, it is strongly suggested that you schedule and attend all interiews.
What does it mean to be a CIT?
On Friday, March 16, 2018 an email will be sent to you with a selection decision. Only one email will be sent, regardless of the number of interviews you attended. All student employees start out as CITs, with select CITs being promoted to Consultants. Due to varying needs between the two groups, training requirements and promotion decision dates differ.
Help Desk CITs
All Help Desk CITs are required to complete summer training at the Help Desk, followed by working shifts during the first three weeks of the semester. In September, all Help Desk CITs will have the opportunity to request shifts for the remainder of the fall. Promotion decisions will be made on September 15, 2018 based on performance as well as availability for the fall semester.
Help Desk CITs that are not able to fit in to the Help Desk fall schedule will remain in the training program until there is an available spot on the schedule. Shifts become available throughout the school year, and the chances of being promoted are very high as long as training requirements are met. Moreover, Help Desk CITs have the opportunity to work during the first three weeks of the spring semester.
All Lab CITs are required to complete summer training at the Labs. Promotion decisions are based on performance at summer training and will be sent via email on August 6, 2018. CITs that are not selected as Consultants will remain in the training program until there is an available spot on the Lab schedules. As shifts become available throughout the school year, the chances of becoming a Consultant are very high as long as training requirements are met.
Lab CITs may choose to complete Help Desk summer training and work at the Help Desk during the temporary schedule, which runs from late August to mid-September.
What does it mean to be a Consultant?
A Consultant is someone who is promoted from the CIT position. Work begins in Fall 2018. Once promoted, Consultants do not need to reapply for employment in subsequent semesters but will be expected to meet scheduling and training requirements. They may be eligible to work for other groups and may be considered for further promotional opportunities.
Anyone selected as a CIT must attend the New Employee Orientation on Saturday, April 21, 2018. If you cannot attend the training session, please inform your interviewer. This information will be used in planning. It will not negatively affect your potential of being selected.
The Labs and the Help Desk have different requirements for summer training, which will be communicated during the meeting in April. All summer training, including the New Employee Training, is paid in September.
Employment Paperwork and Your Social Security Card
Between Monday, March 19, 2018 and Monday, April 2, 2018, you will need to confirm online that you accept the CIT position AND complete your employment paperwork in person. Additional information regarding the completion of employment paperwork will be included in the notification email.
You will need your Social Security Card in order to complete your employment paperwork. It is important that you get your card now. Failure to have your card will result in the loss of your position.
If you cannot locate your Social Security card, you will need to get a replacement. Information and forms can be found on the Social Security Administration website. You will need to complete an SS-5 form and take it to your local SSA office. You must go to the office by Friday, March 23, 2018 in order to get your card on time. Ask for a receipt when you apply for your replacement card and bring it with you when you sign your paper work. The office closest to Rutgers University is:

If you are selected as a CIT, you will need to complete your international student paperwork in order to be employed. It is important that you initiate the paperwork process before April 1, 2018. Failure to complete this paperwork will result in the loss of your CIT position.
Students who are attending the university on an international student visa will need to present a passport and visa in addition to the other employment eligibility requirements.
